USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has approved the WA State plan for the FFY2011 SNAP-Ed contract (Food $ense). WSU Extension’s share is $13 Million ($6,581,517 in federal funds and $6,414,290 in State Share (cost share)). We have over 30 projects covering 26 counties, 4 Tribes, and a new partnership with Central Washington University.

Washington State University (WSU) Extension projects funded for federal fiscal year beginning October 1: Puyallup Administration and management of the contract, Chelan-Douglas, Clark-SW Washington, Grant-Adams, Grays Harbor, King, Kitsap-Clallam, Klickitat, Lincoln-Adams, Mason, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Pend Oreille-Kalispel Tribe of Indians, Pierce, Skagit, Snohomish, Snohomish-Tulalip Tribes, Spokane, Stevens, Stevens-Wellpinit/Spokane Tribe of Indians, Thurston, Walla Walla-SE Washington, Whatcom, Whatcom-Lummi Nation, Yakima, and Central Washington University Subcontract.

Food $ense is a nutrition education program employing more than 200 educators who work with over 150,000 low-income citizens across the state annually. Over half the enrollees are public school students, almost one third are from diverse racial-ethnic groups, and approximately one quarter self-identify as Latino. Bilingual educators are available to deliver programs in Spanish or Russian. Studies on the cost effectiveness of nutrition education programs show that every dollar invested in education yields up to $10 in reduced future health care costs.
